Wheatlands win the Jersey Grand Final at Les Ormes’ and with it the title of The National Nines Open Golf Championship 2011

    28.09.11

Sun drenched Les Ormes Golf Club was the venue for this Grand Final, with the exceptionally hot weather conditions and very tricky pin positions, this was always going to be a low scoring final. With the teams neck and neck at the halfway stage, this tournament was going to be won on the back nine. The 45-stableford team points posted by the Wheatlands team of Allan Black, Rab Brown, and Richard Kemp was the best of the afternoon and more than enough to give them the National Nines Championship Crown 2011.

Second place went to the Feltwell team consisting of Matthew Girkin, Lenny Hopkinson, and Jack Sheward with their team score of 86 stableford points, only 4 points off the winning score. Third place just one point behind was the defending champions the Mahee Island trio of Jack Bennett, Robert Jellie, and Robin Mitchell their 85 stableford points was just not enough for them to retain the title they won last year.

The Best Individual Score with 34 points went to Jack Bennett (Mahee Island) The Nearest the pin on 18th hole was Lenny Hopkinson (Feltwell)

This was the strongest field that we have seen assembled in the Grand Finals to date, the quality on show was quite evident although some of the scores might not reflect this. With so many quality players on show, we expect to see many of them in next year’s competition and many back in the Grand Final. To all of the teams that made it to this Grand Final, we would like you to remind you how you got there, you are all winners and very good ones at that.

We would like to thank every host club and every player that took part in this year’s competition, we find the friendship and camaraderie of nine hole golf clubs to be second to none in fact that is why this competition came into being. Special thanks go out to Stella Lambotte who gave the National Nines its first ever and certainly not the last women’s Jersey regional final, and to all the staff at Les Ormes that made this Grand Final in Jersey possible.

The National Nines 2011 Open Champions Wheatlands Golf Club - Rab Brown, Richard Kemp & Allan Black

Runners up Feltwell Golf Club - Lenny Hopkinson, Jack Sheward & Matthew Girkin

Third Place previous winners Mahee Island Golf Club - Jack Bennett, Robert Jellie & Robin Mitchell

Best Individual score went to Jack Bennett of Mahee Island

Second place went to the Moss Valley H team of Jerome Den Dubbleden, Rob Lawlor and Carl Robson with 87 points and just a point back in third place was the Moss Valley B team of Craig Goodwin, Peter Jones and Les Waddell with 86 points making it a one, two, three for the host club.

This beautiful parkland course was in perfect condition for this regional final and it played every inch of its 5322 yards, making this a real test of golf which will stand the winning team in good stead as they try and bring the National Nines Championship crown back to Moss Valley.

Many thanks goes to Richard Thomas, and all his family and staff for the most hospitable welcome and all the hard work that went into making a great day at Moss Valley Golf Club. Defending Champions Mahee Island Are Into The Jersey Grand Final After Winning At Ormeau

    05.08.11

The Mahee Island trio of Jack Bennett, Robert Jellie and Robin Mitchell held their nerve over the back nine holes to win this regional final at the Ormeau Golf Club.

It was nip and tuck all day long in this Northern Ireland regional final, with many teams in with a chance of winning, but with a score of 104 stableford points it’s the defending champions Mahee Island that are on their way back to Jersey to defend their title to be the UK National Nines Open Champions. Second place went to the Ormeau F team of George Lynas, Terry Neill and David Stewart with 101 points, this team will no doubt be going to the Grand Final sooner rather than later. The same can also be said of the third placed team from City of Belfast A, Tom Lavery, Mark Suggers and Hugh Thompson who posted 100 points.

It was a great day of golf all round, played on a stunning mature tree covered parkland course, with all the visitors receiving a warm and friendly welcome.

A great big thank you to all the green keepers and staff for all their hard work which went in, to make a great day for everyone. Sidcup a force to be reckoned with in Jersey

    29.07.11

The Sidcup E team trio of Dave Denning, Gary Jones and Gary Wilson stormed through the field to win this regional final. To win this tough regional was one thing but to win it by a margin of 8 points makes them a force to be reckoned with at the Grand Final in Jersey.

Making it a Sidcup one, two, was the Sidcup C team of John Asquith, Matt Neal and Terry white with a stableford team score of 95 points. The Tunbridge Wells trio of Chris Brind, Mike Fishlock and Ian Randle were just a point back in third place with 94 points.

John Asquith had the best individual score with 38 points and won a Bushnell Tour V2 Rangefinder. Mike Fishlock had the nearest the pin on the 18th and won a pair of Bolle sunglasses.

Special thanks to Steve Armstrong and all the staff at Sidcup for hosting this regional. Many thanks go to all the green keepers who set up this course, which is a real hidden gem. A special thank you to all the teams that entered this regional, we wish you all the best for the rest of the season and hope to see you next year.

Boars Head A win a nail biting finish to claim their place in the Jersey Grand Final

    21.07.11

Boars Head Golf Centre a stunningly mature Golf Course beautifully set in the Sussex countryside hosted this regional final and what a final it was. After the front nine holes it was nip and tuck and anyones guess as to who were going to win this regional and after eighteen holes the winning score was tied. With the Boars Head A and the Boars Head D both on 99 stableford points this meant that we had to go on count back to find the winners.

The Boars Head A team of Alex Gunn, Ian Neal and Olly Noakes won with a superior back nine score of 54 stableford points and the chance to become The National Nines Open Champions. You have to feel it for the second placed trio of Boars Head D Nigel Bullock, Victor Chan and Graham Sheen who must surely get to the Grand Final sooner rather than later. The clean sweep for the host club was the third placed Boars Head C trio, Denis Peerlees, Peter Sadd and Tony Shepard with 95 stableford points. Tony Shepard won a Bushnell Tour V2 Rangefinder for the Individual score. Alex Gunn won a pair of Bolle sunglasses for the nearest to the pin.

We would very much like to thank all of the other teams that took part in this regional final and we hope very much that we will see you again soon as regional winners. Very many thanks go out to the Green Keepers who laid the course out fabulously and for George who treated everybody to a great barbecue. Bromley through to the Jersey Grand Final after a nail biting finish at Horne Park Golf Club

    15.07.11

The weather was perfect, the golf course was even better and the golf was out of the top draw. In the closest finish of the year so far, this Bromley C trio consisting of Andy Howes, Michael Schmidt and Mark Nelson finished with 103 stableford points, also with 103 points was the Gosport and Stokes Bay team of Martin Wheatly, Simon Hoyle and Dean Smith. But with a superior back nine score it was the Bromley C team that won on the day to win their trip to Jersey and a chance to become the UK National Nines Open Champions.

The Thames Ditton and Esher B team, consisting of Simon Hooper, Trevor Nash and John O’Donnell looked for a while as though they had done enough to get themselves to Jersey with their score of 102 points. One more would have sent them to the Jersey Final, as their 58 points on the back nine was by far the best of the day, so its hats off to the Bromley trio and we wish them all the best for the Grand Final.

Many thanks go out to all the teams that took part to make this by far the most exciting regional we have had so far. Many thanks to Bill Betts, and all the staff at Horne Park Golf Club for their help in making a great day for all the visiting clubs.

The Bushnell tour V2 range finder was won by the German precision machine Michael Schmidt of Bromley C with a total of 41 stableford points. Adrian Heath won a pair of Bolle Kickback Sunglasses for the nearest the pin on the 17th hole.

The Bromley C Winners ( Michael Schmidt, Andy Howes & Mark Nelson )

The Second place team of Gosport & Stokes Bay (Dean Smith, Martin Wheatley & Simon Hoyle)

Third place team Thames Ditton & Esher B (Simon Hooper, John O’Donnell & Trevor Nash)

Whitstable and Seasalter Target National Nines Crown

    06.07.11

The Whitstable A trio of Lloyd Foster, Richard Gremo and Richard Smith put in a top performance to beat off some very good teams, to put themselves in the hunt for the National Nines Open Championship Crown. Their team score of 106 was just too much for the Aquarius trio of Steve Knowles, Barry Langford and Martin Vincent with 102 team points. This Aquarius trio might be down but they are not yet out of their quest to make it to three Grand Finals in a row, and we expect to see them in one of our other regional qualifiers this year.

As is also the case of the third placed Eltham Warren team of Richard Bushnell, Dean Wilson and Lawrence Mason with 97 team points, who also have not given up on their chance to make it two Grand finals in a row.

The other teams from Fawkham Valley and Manston as well as the rest of the host teams ensured that this regional was as tough to win as any that we have held so far this year, but it is the worthy winners Whitstable and Seasalter A team that are on their way to Jersey and we wish them all the best.

The best individual score to win a Bushnell V2 Range Finder went to Lloyd Foster who’s 38 stableford points was equalled by Whitstable’s Club President Michael Behr (Lloyd’s superior back nine score won it for him). The nearest the pin with a pair of Bolle Kickback Sunglasses went to Richard Bushnell.

Many thanks go to Derek Bates for hosting the National Nines, the green keepers, Pearl and all the staff and members at Whitstable and Seasalter Golf Club for a wonderful day.

The Whitstable & Seasalters A Winners ( Richard Gremo, Lloyd Foster & Richard Smith)

Second Place Aquarius (Steve knowles, Martin Vincent & Barry Langford)

Third place Eltham Warren (Dean Lisbon, Lawrence Mason & Richard Bushnell)

Winner of the Bolle sunglasses for nearest the pin Richard Bushnell

Winner of the Bushnell Tour V2 Rangefinder Lloyd Foster

Hartford A Take A Major Step Forward At Rain Soaked Oak Royal

    25.06.11

The Hartford A Team trio of Tim Barnes, Steve Bond and Martin Major are just 18 holes away from winning The National Nines Open Championships after coming through the wind and the rain plus stubborn opposition from all the teams involved.

Oak Royal Golf and Country Club a real gem hidden away in the beautiful Lancashire countryside suffered the wind and the rain all day long and as the weather did its best to not just dampen the golf course but also the spirit of the players. It was golf that was the winner of the day. With most of the players soaked to the skin, it was great to see the camaraderie shown by all of the players at the end of what must have been a very trying day given the playing conditions.

Second spot was filled by the Oak Royal E trio of Steve Ion, Gary Heskwith and Mark Knowles with 88 stableford points. The third placed team was the Oak Royal C trio of Tim Hindle, Keith McIntosh and John Hollinghurst with 83 stableford points.

Many thanks to Ewe Hussain, Sharon, Simon and all of the staff at Oak Royal for making us feel most welcome and a great day all round.

The Hartford A Winners (Martin Major, Steve Bond & Tim Barnes)

Second Place Oak Royal E were Steve Ion, Gary Heskwith & Mark Knowles

Third place Oak Royal C (Tom Hindle, John Hollinghurst & Keith McIntosh)

Muthill Golf Club Through To The National Nines Final

    19.06.11

The Muthill C team of Gregor McGregor. Allan Russell and Niall Seddon took full advantage of playing at home and their 100 stableford points was enough to see them through to the Jersey Grand Final

Local knowledge was in clear evidence as the Muthill A team of Richard Harbinson, James Donaldson and Arthur Campbell came home in second place with 97 stableford points. The Ravelstone A team of Colin Harkins, David Abernethy and John MacDonald took third place with 93 stableford points.

It was a beautiful day at the course with its lovely rolling fairways and views of the countryside that would be fit for a king.

Many thanks to Spike Gadden for all his help organising the regional and we wish him well in his recovery. Also we would like to thank the Green Keeper and staff and the caterers for making such a great day.

The Muthill C winners (Gregor McGregor, Niall Seddon & Alan Russell)

Second Place Muthill A (Arthur Campbell (Richard Harbinson & James Donaldson - Absent))

Evesham D Stroll Into The Grand Final

    10.06.11

On Friday 10th June at Evesham Golf Club, the trio of Stuart Ridley, Lewis Ridley and Paul Callaghan posted a stunning 120 stableford points. 17 points clear of nearest rivals Evesham G. George Parker, Merv Nedis and Pete Moore (103 points). The statistics will show that this was a stroll in the park for the Evesham D team, but around the course that is as unforgiving as it is beautiful, 120 points tells us that this trio will be one of the teams to beat in the Grand Final in Jersey.

Making it a one, two, three for Evesham was their F team of Hywel Jones, Dave Meredith and Paul Wheeler with 95 points. The course was laid out to perfection and was enjoyed by all teams on the day. Stuart Ridley had the best individual score (43 points) which also won him a Bushnell Tour V2 Range Finder. Mike Rogers from Whiteleaf B has the nearest to the pin on the 16th hole and won a pair of Bolle Kickback Sunglasses.

Many thanks to Jerry Cain and all the staff at Evesham for all their help to make a great regional.

First place winners Evesham D - Paul Callaghan, Lewis Ridley & Stuart Ridley

Second Place Evesham G - Merv Nedic, Pete Moore & George Parker

Third place Evesham F - Phil Wheeler, Dave Meredith & Hywel Jones

Winner of the Bushnell Tour V2 Rangefinder Stuart Ridley & winner of Bolle Sunglasses Mike Rogers

The Wind Takes It's Toll As Gosport & Stokes Bay E Finish On A Roll

    03.06.11

With the wind blowing in all directions, it made for a difficult day of scoring at the Gosport and Stokes Bay course. Add to this the dry fairways, this was always going to be a day when hitting the right shot at the right time was going to pay off. With the greens, which the players said were some best on which that they had played on, this was a regional that would be won with some guts and of course some great iron play. With a team score of 93 we know that the winning team of Gosport E, Vince Emmence with father and son Cliff and Gavin Evans have game and the guts. Lets hope that they can take this to the Jersey Final and give themselves the chance to be crowned The National Nines Open Champions 2011.

Although a few shots away in second place the Gosport A team of Graham Urry , Alex Ritchie and John Evans may well of won at another venue as their team score of 88 was a really good score in the conditions. The Gosport B team of Paul Fowler, Jim Brotherton and Tony Keefe with a score of 83 will find themselves at the top of the leader board sooner rather than later.

Many thanks to Mark Chivers and all the staff at Gosport and Stokes Bay for a great day.

The Best Individual Score and a BUSHNELL TOUR V2 RANGEFINDER went to Paul Flower (Gosport B) with a score of 36 points.

The Nearest to the Pin and a pair of BOLLE KICKBACK SUNGLASSES went to Martin Smith (Peacehaven)

The winning team Gosport & Stokes Bay E (Vince Emmence, Gavin Evans & Cliff Evans)

Second place Gosport & Stokes Bay A (Alex Richie, John Evans & Graham Urry)

Third place Gosport & Stokes Bay B (Tony Keefe, Jim Brotherton & Paul Fowler)

Three Out Of Three For Southwold D

    27.05.11

On a day when this challenging heathland course was going to make you pay for any bad shots, the Southwold D trio of Conrad Swan, Keith and Peter Hurr made it three wins in a row. Their team score of 103 was 6 points too good for the rest of the field and for the third year in a row they secured their place in the Grand Final at Les Ormes Jersey and with it another chance to be crowned The UK National Nines Open Champions 2011.

Second place went to the Maldon A team of Ted Ellis, Colin Gooday and Tony Last with a team score of 97. Third place went to the Southwold C team of Jeremy Ladd, David Hammatt and Gareth Jones with a team score of 96. So best of luck to the trio from Southwold, will it be third time lucky in Jersey? We will have to wait and see.

The Bushnell Tour V2 Range Finder was won by Ted Ellis of Maldon A for the highest score of 38 (22 of which were on the back nine) not bad for a 75 year old with a dodgy hip.

The pair of Bolle Kickback sunglasses were won by Steve Mouncer for his nearest the pin on the 18th.

Many thanks to Roger Wilshaw and the staff at Southwold for making us most welcome once again.

Feltwell B Win At Sun Drenched Maldon

    20.05.11

On a beautiful sunny day and on a hidden gem of a golf course, the Feltwell B team of Matthew Girkin, Lenny Hopkinson and Jack Sheward put on a dazzling display of golf. They outshined their opponents with a team score of 102 points. Second place went to the Maldon C team of Alan Buckingham, Ian Ladkin and Martin Reed with a team score of 90 points. Third place went to the Maldon E team, Gordon Harvey, Chris Purkiss and Andy West with a team score of 89 points. So it is well done to Feltwell B who have secured their place in the Grand Final at Les Ormes Jersey in September and with it a chance to become the UK National Nines Champions.

A Bushnell Tour V2 Range Finder was won by Lenny Hopkinson who had the highest individual score.

A pair of Bolle Sunglasses were won by Briggens Park C player, Ross Luke for nearest to the pin on the 14th.

    Wheatlands Lay Down The Gauntlet

    06.04.11

On a day of some really tough pin placements let alone some very good teams on view, the men from Wheatlands A played some exceptional golf to win the Mens first Bushnell National Nines Regional of the year. The Wheatlands A team of Alan Black, Rab Brown and Richard Kemp took the course apart and finished with a team score of 98 points. This was some 16 points clear of Wheatlands C 82 and Les Ormes A, a point further back with 81. So with that display one wonders what may be in store for the other finalists in September.

Milnathort women win the Jersey Grand Final at Les Ormes and are crowned The National Nines Open Championship Winners 2011

In one of the most thrilling of finals you could ever want to watch this was certainly not for the faint hearted. After nine holes the women from Gosport had 50 points, Milnathort women 46 and Les Ormes women 42, after lunch they then went on to the back nine. Each of these very evenly matched teams played their part in this very tight match and each player played their part in making this the best women’s final to date. The 49 points scored by the home team Les Ormes seemed to be enough to give them the title, but the 46 points scored by Milnathort put paid to that and the 40 Gosport points was just not enough .

So with a team score of 92 points the Milnathort team of Karen Allan, Kirsty Flockhard, and Jackie Sneddon won a cracking Grand Final and with it the title of The National Nines Ladies Open Champions 2011. Second place with a team score of 91 points was the Les Ormes trio of Terena Biddulph, Helen Clark, and Stella Lambotte. Third place with 90 points was the Gosport and Stokes Bay team of Sarah Evans, Sarah Greenaway and Annmarie Ferguson. The Best individual Score with an Outstanding 40 points was Sarah Greenaway (Gosport and Stokes Bay)

The Sidcup Ladies team consisting of Julie Wilson, Margaret Hardman and Helen Johnson won 2-1 over a very good Evesham team consisting of Sally Deakin, Lesley Curnock and Val Lemon.

With the very hot conditions as well as Bushey Country Club being a long course with rather small greens this was always going to be a tough final to win and it was the Ladies from Sidcup that won through on the day, to become the National Nines 2011 Ladies Plate Winners. Well done to the Ladies of Evesam for reaching the Plate Final.

Gosport & Stokes Bay Win At Boars Head To Become The England Champions

Boars Head Golf Centre were the hosts of the National Nines Ladies England Final where the Bushey Golf and Country Club trio of Petra Paynter, Rosemary Jackman and Caroline Baker battled it out with Gosport and Stokes Bay A consisting of Annmarie Ferguson, Sarah Greenaway and Sarah Evans, to become the Ladies England Champions. It was all square after the first nine holes with both teams up in one of their matches with the other tied. But at the finish it was the Ladies from Gosport and Stokes Bay that won through and become this years England Champions. It was a great effort by the Ladies from Bushey Golf and Country Club considering that this was the first time this club had entered the competition, so the rest beware this team is going places. At the moment though it’s the Ladies from Gosport and Stokes Bay that are going to the Grand Final in Jersey and with it the chance to be crowned the UK National Nines Ladies Champions.

Its guts are 100% Bushnell laser rangefinder but the package outside will rival your favorite driver with a custom high-tack grip. The V2 sets a new standard in the complete laser rangefinder package - look, feel and performance. A package that may see players starting to waggle their V2 before the range with their targets.

Bushnell, the No 1 laser rangefinder in golf and Preferred Supplier to the 2010 European Ryder Cup Team, pioneered the golf laser rangefinder and has developed every technological break-through ever since. Bushnell lasers can start obtaining accurate distances to any object on a golf course, right out of the box, with +/-1 yard/metre accuracy. The must-have Bushnell PinSeeker® technology ensures easy and accurate acquisition of the flag without inadvertently capturing background targets. Bushnell laser rangefinders - accurate distance made simple.
